Moving to Malta
01 July 2024
By far, the best time to enjoy Malta would be in summer. The island is home to countless picturesque beaches and a number of historical landmarks. Summer is the season in which to truly enjoy yourself and explore the very best of what the island has to offer. In this blog post, we’ll be giving you a guide on how to enjoy the Maltese summer whilst also remaining environmentally conscious!
As previously mentioned, Malta has some of the most stunning beaches in the Mediterranean. These beaches deserve to be enjoyed for generations to come and thus must be properly taken care of! There are little changes we can make when going to the beach which would not harm the environment in any way. This would include bringing reusable water bottles, using eco-friendly sunscreen, and packing snacks in sustainable containers. Sounds easy right? An added bonus would be to do a little clean-up of the area around where you stayed on the beach. In this way, you would not only enjoy the beach but you would also leave it in a better condition than how you found it!
Apart from the physical side of the beach, the water side can also be truly explored and enjoyed. Malta is home to a number of marine sites that can be enjoyed in a sustainable way. This would include snorkelling and scuba diving in marine conservation areas. This would allow you to explore Malta’s underwater habitats whilst not contributing to environmental degradation. If you prefer to stay above water, you can also enjoy other eco-friendly activities such as kayaking or paddle boarding. In the same way as before, you could also pick up any plastic debris that you may come across, again leaving the sea in a better condition than how you found it.
Sticking with the water theme, it’s important to note that although being an island, Malta is a water-scarce country. This means that freshwater on the island is rather limited and thus needs to be taken care of. Whenever possible, try not to leave water running unattended, it just leads to an unnecessary waste. Conserving water is crucial for Malta’s sustainability as it safeguards its ecosystems and supporting local communities.
Even though Malta is such a small country, there is still plenty of fresh, sustainable food to try. When cooking, always look out for local, in-season ingredients. These can be obtained at sustainable farmers’ markets. It would be much better for the environment if we sourced our agricultural products from Maltese farms. The same can be said for fish, Malta’s cuisine is rich in seafood. Fish markets like the one found in Marsaxlokk provide fresh fish and other seafood every day. When it comes to dining out, it would be good practice to prioritise whenever possible, restaurants who use local ingredients rather than imported ones. The importance of this use of locally-sourced ingredients is the positive effect it has on our carbon footprint. Importing products takes a massive toll on our carbon footprint. By eating local, we can save drastically on carbon footprint. Furthermore, by supporting local farmers and sustainable fishing practices, we can ensure a vibrant culinary scene while preserving Malta’s agricultural heritage.
In conclusion, these are just a few ways in which through making small changes, we can still enjoy our Maltese summer to the fullest. All it takes is a little extra care and planning so that we can ensure that future generations will also have the opportunity to enjoy summer just as we will. Have a great sustainable summer 2024!
