18:15 Maleficent – Mistress of Evil

Maleficent - Mistress of Evil
For those of you who love Sleeping Beauty and all the Disney classics, we heavily recommend this take on the classic stories we all know and love. By humanising the evil villain; Maleficent, we are catapulted into a different perspective- that of understanding and relating to the otherwise pure evil archetype. In this story, five years have passed since the death of King Stefan, and now, two kingdoms are planned to reunite in a symbol of peace and harmony. However, rumours of treason start to wedge their way into the story which result in fear and prejudice. Maleficent and Princess Aurora are caught in the middle between the politics of men.

21:30 The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 – New Episode

For those of you who haven’t watched ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood but are interested in dystopian series and challenging ideas of democracy and totalitarianism, this one’s for you. ‘Gilead’, a town which used to be part of the United States turns into a fundamentalist regime in an attempt to battle environmental disasters and declining birth rates. As part of the new governmental regime, the few remaining fertile women are forced into having children with the upper class families. Harping back to echoes of the Aryan race, this series closely follows ‘Offred’, a woman who strives to survive in this terrifying society.

In the 4th season with which we are all on the edge of our seats, Elisabeth Moss’ June is asking for justice. Justice for the women of Gilead she has left behind after successfully managing to escape Gilead. This series poses a number of questions to present-day society and makes us question the impact of environmental disasters and disease closely tied with gender politics together with the importance of gatekeeping political figures that ultimately control the way we live.

16:50 Emma

This classic Jane Austen novel is brought to life by Anya Taylor-Joy (most of us know her as the star from The Queen’s Gambit). For those of you who haven’t read ‘Emma’, it’s about a highly confident young woman; Emma Woodhouse, who professes herself to be the village matchmaker in 1800s England. Unfortunately, her vision for excellence blinds her to the natural ties of true love. Sprinkled with Austen’s satire of social class, expectations and marriage, we delve deeper into the confines of Emma’s mind and outlook on life and love which is challenged to change after a mishap with a dear friend.

14:15 Tolkien

This is a must-watch for all those Tolkien and WWI lovers. ‘Tolkien’ transports you into the life and mind of J.R.R. Tolkien and his experiences with love, death, friendship and mental illness through World War 1. Through his extensive literary upbringing and knowledge of archaic texts, linguistics, and a gift of escaping into the fantasy-filled corners of his mind, he begins to write the iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy as a catharsis. Starring Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins, we heavily recommend this one.
